Hoot Brown Statue Dedication
The family of Hoot Brown, mother Dee Pearce, of Ridgway and Wilmington, N.C., and Banks Brown and Laura Cattell of Telluride extend an invitation to join the family at Hoot Brown Park for the dedication and unveiling of the Hoot Brown bronze sculpture, this Saturday, March 1. The sculpture will hold pride of place in Hoot’s favorite free-riding terrain which now bears his name. Hoot died in a tragic accident on the ski area in March, 2006.

The family also expresses their gratitude to Mike McCullough, sculptor and great friend, who poured his heart, soul and talent into capturing Hootie’s spirit. The dedication begins at 11 a.m. There will be a few words from the family who are coming from all across the country, including sister and brother-in-law Lauren and Emmet Stovall, also of Wilmington, the indomitable Pearce Family from Texas, and the parents of Laura Cattell. It will be a wonderful day with an exhibition by Hootie’s buddies as well as the new free-riders, Team Gravity. The exhibition will be followed by a barbeque at the Yurt at the base of the NASTAR hill.

Michael McCullough was commissioned by Hoot's family to sculpt Hoot doing what he loved most: skiing. His studio is in The Old Ridgway Firehouse, which made it easy for family and friends to observe the process of “making art breathe.” Once the sculpture was completed in clay, the people closest to Hoot were invited, by the artist, to sign the artwork with a short message. Then the molds of the sculpture were taken to Lands End Sculpture Center in Paonia and the signatures of those people are now cast in the bronze for eternity.

Jeff Proteau, of Telluride Ski and Golf Co., facilitated the location on the ski mountain, just as he has for the three previous monumental bronzes by McCullough. Hoot was a freestyle skier, so, as an added twist to the sculpture, the bronze sculpture is mounted atop a 15-foot spinning pole, activated by skiers and passers by, who grab the handle at the base and give it a spin.

Mark Bosse, a Telluride Ski Company lift tech, was the natural person to be tapped as the fabricator of the spinning assembly. Together, these people, and the sculptor, have produced an innovative, interactive, healing work of ark that will add to the thrill of skiing Telluride.

Hoot’s family also wants to thank everyone for the love and support showered on them which has helped so much these past two years. The community has honored many of its fallen members by naming ski runs after them, but Hoot gets a statue!
